Laminar Air Flow

Laminar Air Flow

JB TECH” Laminar air flow (LAF) is a fluid dynamics principle where air moves in smooth, parallel layers (lamina) at a uniform speed and direction with minimal turbulence. This concept is widely applied in Laminar Air Flow Cabinets (or clean benches) to create sterile, particle-free environments for sensitive scientific and industrial work.

  • Unidirectional Flow: Air moves as a single, uniform body without swirling or mixing, preventing the formation of “dead zones” where contaminants might settle.
  • High-Efficiency Filtration: Air is passed through a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter, which traps 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 µm, including bacteria and viruses.
  • Positive Pressure: The system maintains a slightly higher internal pressure than the surrounding room, which prevents external, contaminated air from entering the workspace.

Type of Laminar Air Flow :

  1. Vertical Laminar Air Flow Cabinet: A vertical laminar flow system directs the vertical laminar flow into a downward filter located on top of the working chamber above the operative surface. It emphasizes gravitational impact and moves the flow via the front access area to remove the particles.
  2. Horizontal Laminar Air Flow Cabinet : A Horizontal laminar flow hoods provide air streams that travel in the same direction (horizontally) and at the same speed with little to no turbulence. The goal of laminar flow is to eliminate swirls that can introduce particulate contamination to items on the work surface, resulting in uncontrolled results
  3. Reverse Laminar Air Flow : The centres on using negative pressure & re- circulatory, downward air flow to protect operators and the environment from airborne contaminants during powder handling. It captures powder aerosols at the source, preventing their escape into the surrounding area.
  4. Ceiling Laminar Air Flow : Ceiling laminar air flow (CLAF) systems work by forcing HEPA-filtered, ultra-clean air downward in a consistent, unidirectional, and non-turbulent (laminar) pattern from the ceiling to the floor. This creates a “piston effect” that constantly flushes out contaminants, maintains a positive pressure environment, and protects sensitive areas like operating tables from particle accumulation
  5. Mobile/Trolley Laminar Air Flow Unit : A mobile/trolley laminar air flow (LAF) unit provides a portable, sterile, and ISO Class 5/Class 100 particle-free environment for transporting or processing sensitive materials. It operates by drawing in ambient air through pre-filters, forcing it through HEPA/ULPA filters to remove contaminants, and directing it in a controlled, unidirectional (laminar) flow over the workspace.
  6. Table Top Laminar Air Flow : A table top laminar air flow (LAF) unit is a compact, bench-mounted, contamination-free workstation. It operates by drawing in ambient air through a pre-filter, forcing it through a HEPA filter to remove 99.97% of particles less than 0.3 µm, and discharging the filtered air in a smooth, unidirectional, and parallel, streamline flow at 0.3 to 0.7 m/s across the work surface.
